JUST IN: Lagos Assembly Gets First Female Speaker
Lasbat Meranda has made history by becoming the first woman to serve as Speaker of the Lagos House of Assembly, following the impeachment of Speaker Mudashiru Obasa. This historic moment comes after Obasa's impeachment amidst corruption allegations. Meranda takes on the role after seven men previously held the position since the first Speaker, Oladosu Oshinowo, in 1979.
Meranda, a member of the Lagos House of Assembly since 2015, represents Apapa 1 and is currently serving her third term. Prior to her legislative career, she served as a political aide in Apapa Local Government Area from 2008 to 2014 and also worked in the private sector, including running an oil and gas company.
Born on August 16, 1980, in Lagos, Meranda attended Randle Primary School and Anglican Girls Grammar School, and later pursued undergraduate and graduate studies at Lagos State University and the University of Lagos, respectively. Despite a relatively low public profile on legislative matters, she is known for her loyalty to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and her alignment with party policies.
