Enugu State House of Assembly Clears 15 Commissioner Nominees

The Enugu State House of Assembly has successfully screened and cleared 15 Commissioner nominees put forward by Governor Peter Mbah. The list, constituting the first batch of nominees, was transmitted to the Assembly for thorough screening and clearance as potential members of the state executive council.

During a recent plenary session, convened under the Chairmanship of the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Uche Ugwu, the lawmakers meticulously examined the nominees. This process was notably devoid of traditional practices such as the cultural "bow and go," reflecting the Assembly's commitment to thorough evaluation.

However, three former Commissioners - Deacon Okey Ogbodo, Prof. Emmanuel Obi, and Dr. Kingsley Udeh - did not undergo the screening process set by the lawmakers.

Among the notable individuals who faced the screening were Lyon Ekweremadu and Adaora Chukwu. Lyon Ekweremadu is the son of former Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu, while Adaora Chukwu is the daughter of former Governor Sullivan Chime.

During the questioning by the Assembly members, Engr. Lawrence Eze, a nominee for the position of Commissioner for Works, emphasized his commitment to ensuring the construction of quality roads with a solid foundation. Eze highlighted that many roads tend to deteriorate shortly after construction due to inadequate foundations.

Ekweremadu, a lawyer, outlined his plans to alleviate congestion in correctional facilities within the state. He expressed concern about inmates facing unjust charges and those awaiting trial for extended periods, emphasizing the need for reform.

Former Commissioner for Health, Emmanuel Obi, discussed his proposal to bolster Primary Health Centers and provide 24-hour services to rural communities. He stressed the importance of a strategic plan to enhance the health system in Enugu State.

Another nominee, Ngozi Enih, pledged to support the implementation of government policies, particularly those relating to youth and women empowerment. Enih voiced concern about unemployment and criminal activities, expressing her intent to address these challenges through innovative approaches.

Nathaniel Urama emphasized the importance of de-risking the economic sector by using federal allocation funds as sinking funds. Engr. Gerrald Otiji, drawing on his extensive experience, conveyed his commitment to transforming the state's infrastructure. He also highlighted the potential of renewable energy to save costs.

As the Enugu State House of Assembly successfully concludes the screening process, the cleared nominees are set to assume their roles as members of the state executive council, contributing their expertise and ideas to the progress of Enugu State.
